New disaster management website

A new disaster management website has been launched by the food security programme of the Southern African Development Community (SADC). The Southern African Floods and Drought Network, developed with funding from the US Agency of International Development (USAID), aims to facilitate the exchange of information that can be used by disaster and technical communities "in preparing for and responding to the occurrence of cyclones, floods and droughts", a SADC statement said. The website is produced as an early warning service by the SADC regional meteorology, hydrology, food security and disaster communities to its member states. The structure and content of the website are primarily influenced by SADC's regular reviews of food security, rainfall and water level conditions throughout the region. SADC "welcomes comments that will help make this website as useful as possible in facing the common challenge to protect life and property and ensure food security in the face of threats posed by climate, weather and related hazards," the statement added.
