Media protest govt action against journalist

Three associations of journalists in Benin, protested the withdrawal of the press accreditation of an editorial director of a private newspaper over what the government called publishing false news, the PanAfrican News Agency (PANA) reported on Friday. Benin's Communication and Broadcasting Authority, on Monday withdrew the accreditation of Patrick Adjamonsi, of L'Aurore, which recently published an article reportedly linking Benin with the 11 September terrorist attacks in the United States. The paper was denied the State's press grant for 2001, PANA added. But the National Association of Benin Reporters, the Federation of Benin Publishers, and the Union of Benin Private Press Journalists, jointly condemned the government decision at a press conference in Cotonou on Wednesday. They described it as "arbitrary, illegal and null and void" the news agency reported.
