Air pollution campaign set to start

The Ministry of the Environment, Housing and Town Planning is organising a two-week campaign to reduce air pollution in Benin, PANA reported. The campaign, which starts on Wednesday, aims to control exhaust emissions from motorbikes, cars, buses and trucks and to encourage owners to properly maintain their vehicles. Any owner whose vehicle is found to exceed the accepted exhaust emission level will face punishment, PANA reported a ministry statement as saying. Fines range from 10,000 CFA for two-wheeled vehicles, 20,000 CFA for saloon cars, 25,000 CFA for public buses and 35,000 CFA for trucks. [US $1 = 740 CFA]. The campaign is due to end on 8 December.
