UN team assesses impact of floods

    ABIDJAN

    A UN Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC) team is now in Guinea to assess the needs of people affected by floods and coordinate international aid and assistance, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported on Friday.

    The floods, which occurred in August and September in Haute Guinee, eastern Guinea, affected some 220,000 people and destroyed over 2,000 hectares of farm land, OCHA said.

    The UNDAC team arrived on Thursday in the Guinean capital, Conakry. Its mission, due to end on 29 October, will focus on the flood's impact on health, education, agriculture, food security and local infrastructure.

    In the meantime, OCHA allocated US $30,000 last week for local purchases of relief items and logistical support, while the government of Norway has donated US $20,000 through OCHA to assist the local population.
