Officials to discuss ways to fight human trafficking

A week-long meeting to discuss ways of combating human trafficking and corruption is due to open on 21 October in Ghana's capital, Accra, an official of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) told IRIN on Tuesday. "Our experts will discuss the problem of trade in human beings in West Africa, particularly the exploitation and trafficking of children, PANA reported ECOWAS Executive Secretary Lansana Kouyate as saying on Saturday in the Senegalese capital, Dakar. He added that the meeting, co-organised by ECOWAS, would also examine measures to end drug trafficking and money laundering, which go hand in hand with terrorism, PANA reported. At least one expert each from the ministries of Justice, Internal Security and Social Affairs in the 15 member states is expected to attend, the ECOWAS official said from Nigeria's capital, Abuja. The meeting, due to end on 28 October, is organised jointly with the UN Office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention, he added.
