Legislators from member countries of the Economic Community of West African
States (ECOWAS) opened the ECOWAS parliament's second session on Tuesday in Abuja, Nigeria, with a pledge to tackle the issues of child trafficking and child soldiers.
The Nigerian newspaper 'ThisDay' quoted speaker of the ECOWAS parliament, Ali Diallo, as saying that the two issues would be discussed with the aim of providing legislation that would empower African heads of state to take decisive steps to curb them.
Other issues on the agenda were the proposed establishment of a West African currency; transparency and good management of subregional economies; a review of the protocol establishing the ECOWAS parliament; residency and citizens rights; security; and cooperation in the distribution of fuel to member states that do not produce oil.
