Flood-affected facing serious health risks

Over 97,000 flood-affected people in northern and eastern Sudan face serious health problems unless assistance reaches them soon, UNOCHA said on 14 September. Many cases of water-related diseases such as malaria, pneumonia and diarrhoea had been reported in flood-affected areas, particularly in the most severely affected states of Nile River, Kassala, Southern Darfur and Sinnar, UNOCHA said in its fifth situation report on the floods. The effects of massive flash floods and the Nile's rising waters were emerging more clearly as the flood-waters receded, the report added. The UN Under-Secretary-General and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Kenzo Oshima, announced during his visit to Sudan from 9 to 12 September that UNOCHA would make available US $100,000 for relief assistance to flood-affected populations. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in August appealed for US $770,000 to support relief work for those affected by the flooding, arising from heavy rain in early August, particularly in the Nile catchment area of Ethiopia.
