President sacks Supreme Court judges

Guinea-Bissau President Kumba Yala dismissed three Supreme Court judges on Monday, news organisations reported. According to AFP, the dismissed judges include the deputy president of the court, Venancio Martins. The move followed signs of tension between the president and the Supreme Court which, in late August, declared that a presidential decision to expel the Ahmadiyya Muslim group from the country was unconstitutional. Yala reacted by describing the Supreme Court's judges as corrupt and mediocre. The dismissal of the three judges came just days after Martins said - late last week - that the court intended to sue Yala for slander and interference in the internal affairs of the judiciary.
