Tanzania asks France to make all belligerents join talks

Tanzania’s foreign minister Jakaya Kikwete at the weekend asked his French counterpart, Hubert Vedrine, to ask his government to use its influence in the UN Security Council to make all the belligerent forces in the Burundi conflict to join the Arusha peace process so that the envisaged transitional government could take off by November, AFP reported. Kikwete was quoted as stressing the importance for the transition government under President Pierre Buyoya to accept the rebels in the process so as to eventually form a government of national unity. Tanzania is host to hundreds of thousands of refugees from Burundi. Vedrine, for his part, pledged his country’s support in resolving the crisis in Burundi and that in the DRC. He also resolved to enhance bilateral economic relations with Tanzania.
