Human rights conference underway

A two-week conference on human rights and democracy attended by about 30 officials from six French-speaking West African countries opened in Cotonou on Monday, Beninese state television reported. The workshop, organised by the National University of Benin, aims to retrain public officials, including teachers, lawyers, judges, security officials and journalists. Benin’s minister of higher education and scientific research, Dorothey Sossa, emphasised the importance of the training, saying it enabled various social stakeholders in African countries to learn about human rights and democracy, the Panafrican News Agency (PANA) reported. Topics on the workshop’s agenda include the general theory of civil and political rights, the African Charter of Human and People’s Rights, the cultural rights of women and children, the sovereignty of states and international criminal law, PANA said. Participants come from Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Senegal and Togo.
