Joseph Kabila visits Angola

Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) President Joseph Kabila arrived in Luanda on Wednesday for a 24-hour visit to cement ties with Angola, one of his country’s key military and political allies, AP reported. Kabila was expected to hold private talks with Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos and to address parliament during his stay, but officials said no detailed schedule was available. A foreign ministry statement said the visit sought to “strengthen bilateral co-operation”. According to the report, Angola has provided few details about its military ties with the DRC, where it claims to have 300 troops. Angola sent troops to the DRC in 1998 to support then-president Laurent-Desire Kabila against rebels backed by Rwanda and Uganda. Zimbabwe and Namibia also joined the fight in support of Kabila. After he was assassinated in January, Luanda switched its support to his son, Joseph.
