National reconciliation effort kicks off

A national reconciliation drive, announced by Cote d’Ivoire’s government following political violence in October and December, kicked off on Monday. It includes separate visits by cabinet ministers to various parts of the country to obtain proposals on how to restore national unity. Their week-long inquiries are the first phase in a process scheduled to end with a national conference on reconciliation. A three-day workshop involving political and social leaders is also part of the process. It started on Tuesday. Some 200 people died and scores were wounded as a result of political violence which erupted after presidential elections in October.
