President demands more flood relief

Malawi’s President Bakili Muluzi has said he is disappointed by the slow international response to the devastating floods that hit the country last month, the BBC reported. On a visit to the worst-hit areas in the south of the country - Chikwawa and Nsanje districts - Muluzi said that little international aid had so far arrived, despite a government appeal for almost US $7 million. Last week, WFP launched a US $3.3 million emergency operation over the next three months. The BBC reported that, according to the government’s latest figures, 59 people died in the floods and 330,000 were made homeless.
