Zimbabwe civil servants to strike over pay

Zimbabwe’s civil servants are to go on strike on Wednesday to press for higher pay increases, the state news agency ZIANA reported on Monday. Public service association executive secretary Charles Chiviro was quoted as saying the government had imposed a 15 percent pay increases on civil servants before salary negotiations had been concluded. Government workers want increases of between 60 and 68 percent, which is more in line with soaring inflation. “We are certainly going on strike from Wednesday,” Chiviro told ZIANA. Last year President Robert Mugabe’s government awarded civil servants salary raises of up to 90 percent after they threatened to strike over an initial offer of 40 percent.
