Floods claim at least five lives

A woman and her four children died in floods in Malawi’s northern Rumphi district, SAPA reported on Friday. Police said flood waters swept away the victims’ house after heavy rains. The incident happened after the Lungazi river, which empties its water into Lake Malawi, burst its banks. The floods have destroyed seven other houses and left 14 people homeless. A joint police and army search has failed to recover the bodies of the victims. Meanwhile, floods have also destroyed some 170 hectares of maize field in Chikwana district, south of the country following heavy weekend rains.
