US concerned by Zimbabwe - Albright

The United States is “concerned” by the situation in Zimbabwe, visiting US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright told journalists in Botswana on Monday. “It is important for Zimbabwe to get the message that we are concerned about the developments there,” she told a press conference in Gaborone after talks with President Festus Mogae and Foreign Minister Mompati Merafhe. “We would very much like to see Zimbabwe follow the rule of law, and carry out democratic elections legally and peacefully, and to be able to have an ability to deal with what are clearly very serious issues,” Albright said. Albright said her talks with Mogae and Merafhe had included the situation in Zimbabwe, the war in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and other regional issues.
