School feeding targets 10,000 in Kirundo

    NAIROBI

    The minister for education, Prosper Mpawenayo, and the World Food Programme (WFP) have jointly launched a pilot project for a primary schools feeding programme in the drought-affected northern province of Kirundo, the UN food agency stated in its latest emergency report on Friday. The pilot project was intended to assist some 10,000 children in four communes in Kirundo, where school attendance has fallen due to drought-related hunger. “Since school feeding has begun, many pupils who had deserted school have returned and the number is regularly increasing,” the report added. In the coming months, the agency intends to target an additional 60,000 school children in the similarly drought-affected Muyinga, Kirundo and Ngozi provinces in the north of the country.
