Mozambican opposition leader Afonso Dhlakama has accused the ruling FRELIMO party of being behind the assassination of a leading journalist on Wednesday. He told a press conference on Friday that Carlos Cardoso, a leading investigative journalist, was gunned down in Maputo because of his “direct and frank criticism on government over its handling of the recent demonstrations against the illegitimate government of FRELIMO”. Dhlakama, leader of the former rebel movement RENAMO, added: “Cardoso, who had hardly been sympathetic to either FRELIMO or RENAMO, was killed because President (Joaquim) Chissano felt shame after his criticism”. Cardoso, the editor of the independent daily newssheet ‘Metical’, was due to be buried on Friday.
