Hundreds flee clashes in the east

Meanwhile, more than 15,000 villagers fled their homes in Kaserem sub-county in Kapchorwa district, eastern Uganda, following a battle between local home guards and the Mbale Local Defence Unit (LDU). Three LDU members were killed and three people were wounded. The ‘New Vision’ said that the attack followed an attempt by 18 Mbale LDU members to effect the release of three colleagues from the sub county prison. The paper quoted eyewitnesses as saying that the shooting started when the LDU commander sent a signal to his colleagues to withdraw, which was mistaken for an attack signal by the Kapchorwa home guards. Others also alleged that the misunderstanding was sparked off by residents who were protesting against the release of the LDU members.
