Government confirms election dates

Cote d’Ivoire’s government confirmed at the weekend that elections will be held as scheduled despite a suggestion by an Organisation of African Unity (OAU) commission that the presidential poll be postponed. The presidential election is to be held on 22 October, with 7 October as the deadline for the Constitutional Court to rule on the eligibility of the 19 prospective candidates. The second round, if one is needed, would be held 15 days after the results of the first round are announced. Legislative elections are programmed for 10 December and municipal polls for 28 January, according to a government communique. =
