Police strike

A strike by Malian police entered its second day on Wednesday, a media source in Bamako told IRIN. The police union called the strike to press for improvements in the general status of officers and the provision of individual weapons to all members of the force, according to PANA. Other demands include the nullification of punitive transfers of police union leaders, and the general improvement of living and working conditions in the force, PANA said. The media source said the strike has caused a few traffic jams although the gendarmes had replaced the police on city streets.
