Museveni cancels visit to New York

    NAIROBI

    President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda was due to visit the area on Thursday to assess the deteriorating security situation, local newspapers reported. But in a sign of its seriousness, Museveni cancelled his visit to the United Nations Millennium Summit in New York.

    Simon Mulongo, the resident district commissioner, said on Wednesday that Museveni would address residents of Kyangwali and Kabwoya subcounties. “It’s true the president will be in Hoima tomorrow and he will address the people of Kabwoya and Kyangwali on issues relating to security. He is not here for politics,” Mulongo said.

    The residents have welcomed Museveni’s visit, saying it would give soldiers the morale to flush out the rebels. However, top security sources said the soldiers lacked the military capacity to flush out the rebels.
