Government to reduce pesticides in horticultural produce

Meanwhile, the Kenyan government called for alternative ways to control pests and diseases in horticultural produce to protect its US $200 market share of the export market. Ministry of Agriculture Permanent Secretary Shem Migot Adhola, in a recent ‘East African Standard’ report, said “new regulations in the market demanded that agrochemicals used to protect crops are phased out to a minimum before harvest.” He added, “the government hopes to phase out 50 percent of the active ingredients of chemicals used in crop production by the year 2003”.
