The head of the military government in the Comoros islands, Colonel Azali Assoumani, has signed a reconciliation deal with the leader of the Anjouan separatists, Said Abeid Abderemane, the BBC reported on Monday.
Under Saturday’s accord signed at Fomboni on the Moheli island, they agreed to commit themselves to creating a “Comoran entity”. They also reaffirmed their membership of the franc currency zone. The creation of a tripartite Commission (Anjouan, Moheli and Greater Comoro) was also agreed on, to help define the mechanisms and modalities for the operation of the new Comoron state.
News report said the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) had denounced the latest accord. An OAU communiqué was quoted as saying that the agreement would “contribute to the aggravation of tension and instability in the archipelago”.
