Railway corridor to open

Stakeholders in the development of the Malawi-Mozambique railway corridor that ends in the Mozambican port of Nacala are to meet in Maputo this week, ahead of the official opening of the rail route next month, news reports said. The project is part of a bilateral programme to rehabilitate and promote the Nacala railway corridor, which was destroyed during Mozambique’s 13-year civil war. When fully developed the corridor is expected to boost agriculture, mining and tourism. Malawi’s public works minister Brown Mpinganjira told journalists in Blantyre that using the shorter and cheaper Nacala corridor route would save Malawi an annual US $720 million.
