Army drives rebels from Bonj area

The Sudanese government said Thursday it had driven the rebel Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) out of the Bonj area in the southeastern Blue Nile region. Speaking on state radio, General Mohamed Osman Yassin, was quoted as saying the army had “defeated the rebels and captured many tanks, howitzers and other weapons in the last battle over Bonj.” He added: “Our forces have cleaned the area from any trace of the rebellion in this decisive battle.” He did not give further details or say when the battle occurred.
