Clinton demonstrating support for Mandela

US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Susan Rice has said President Bill Clinton’s presence in Arusha to witness the signing ceremony is a demonstration of support for Mandela’s mediation efforts. She told a press briefing on Tuesday the US had supported the Burundi peace process “for several years now, including through the appointment of special envoy and former member of Congress, Howard Wolpe”. “President Mandela has kept President Clinton closely informed of his progress since he took over from former Tanzanian president Julius Nyerere,” she added.
