UN staffer dies in Kisangani

    ABIDJAN

    UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Bernard Miyet on Friday also briefed the Security Council on the death of a UN staff member in the eastern town of Kisangani. The staff member, Joseph Comerford of the United Kingdom, was found dead in his room on Friday morning. The deceased was part of a group sent to Kisangani on Wednesday in advance of a UN assessment team that was to determine the degree of damage caused by armed conflict between Rwanda and Uganda in that town. “The UN Mission (MONUC) is launching an investigation, and UN personnel are already on the ground working to determine the cause of death,” UN spokesman Manoel de Almeida e Silva told a press briefing in New York, adding that the “UN team’s work in Kisangani has been suspended for the time being, in view of the circumstances”.
