Floods kill four, hundreds homeless

Flash floods in southeastern Nigeria have left four people dead, hundreds homeless and millions of naira worth of damage, AFP reported, citing local media organisations. The flooding, described by a federal Ministry of Works official as the worst in the area in 10 years, occurred when the Calabar River broke its banks last week, cutting off Cross River State from its neighbours. The National Emergency Management Agency, responsible for disaster relief, could not be reached for immediate comment. Floods occur periodically in Nigeria. Flooding in the north last year, described as the country’s worst in three decades, left tens of thousands of people homeless.
