Government to implement SADC trade protocol

Commerce and Industry Minister William Harrington said that despite Zambia having not yet ratified the Southern African Development Community (SADC) trade protocol it would implement the agreement which comes into being on 1 September, the Lusaka daily, ‘The Post’ said on Wednesday. Zambia is the only one out of the 11 member countries party to the protocol that has not yet ratified it. Harrington said Zambia had not felt comfortable ratifying the protocol due to a number of unresolved issues. These issues included the rules of origin, elimination of non-tariff barriers and treatment of sensitive products. Other concerns were market access on sugar and dispute settlement mechanisms, he said.
