ZESA to be privatised

The state owned Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) is to be privatised to allow private investors to enter the energy sector, news reports said on Thursday. The executive chairman, Sydney Gata, was quoted as saying that ZESA would be unbundled and privatised over the next two years. “The reform programme entails the unbundling of ZESA into a number of business units and their commercialisation to operate under the Companies Act and not the Electricity Act. The need to restore long-term energy supply efficiently can only be realised through privatisation and competition in an environment where customers determine who supplies them,” Gata said.
