The Eritrean authorities deported 3,000 Ethiopians through a mine-infested area on the northern Ethiopian Tserona front, the Ethiopian government said on Thursday. A government spokesperson said the Ethiopians had been forced across the border on Thursday in an act that "further attested to the Eritrean government's disregard for basic human rights and contempt for international human rights principles". Eritrean security forces had carried out an overnight swoop of Ethiopian-occupied houses in the Eritrean capital Asmara, and had deported 550 women and children on 30 July through dangerous areas without the knowledge of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the statement on Ethiopia radio said.
Ethiopia "deplored" the silence of the international community on the issue, it added. Both Ethiopia and Eritrea have continued to accuse each other of human rights abuses since the signing the 18 June ceasefire which halted fighting in the two-year border war.
