ICRC concerned over civilians' welfare

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on Thursday expressed deep concern about the impact on civilians of the continuing fighting between Ugandan and Rwandan forces in Kisangani. In a press release, the organisation said that the clashes which broke out on 5 June had left at least 50 civilians dead, and 150 wounded. It noted that the fighting had affected most parts of the city, including residential areas, making it difficult for civilians to find food and water. "The city's electricity and water supply systems have been out of action since the hostilities began," ICRC said. It reminded the warring parties that they were obliged to take all steps needed to safeguard the civilian population from the dangers of military operations.
