Public sector union gives strike notice

The National Union of Guinea-Bissau Workers says it has notified the government of its intention to begin a three-day general strike beginning Monday unless minimum wages are raised. Union spokesman Sebastiao Gomes Correia told reporters in the capital on Tuesday that the government must take a final decision on a new salary scale setting the monthly minimum wage at 45,000 francs CFA (about US $64). Civil servants are paid 15,000 francs (just over US $21) a month, he said, in a country in which a bag of rice costs 12,500 francs (nearly US $18).
