Kisangani fighting intensifies

An MONUC officer in Kisangani described Tuesday's fighting as fierce. "Since morning heavy fighting has been going on all over the city, there is no water and electricity, and food is running out," Major Jamil Ahmed told IRIN. "The situation is worsening but all UN personnel are safe at the moment." Humanitarian sources told IRIN that both sides were shelling each other's position around Tshopo bridge and Boyama plateau on Tuesday afternoon, and using light weapons in the centre of town. Rwandan forces are said to be holding most of the centre while the Ugandans are holding the northern part of town, around Tshopo bridge.
