Government delegation to meet CNDD in Europe

A government delegation, including both army and civilian members, travelled to Italy to hold discussions with officials of the Hutu opposition group Conseil national pour la defense de la democratie (CNDD), the Burundi news agency ‘Azania’ reported on Friday. Peace Process Minister Ambroise Niyonsaba led the delegation to Rome, where talks were scheduled to take place under the mediation of the Catholic Sant’ Egidio community. Sant’ Egidio has been coordinating an unofficial ‘second track’ in the Burundi peace process in an attempt to arrange a suspension of hostilities and help political dialogue move forward in the official Arusha talks, now being facilitated by Nelson Mandela, according to a report on the Sant’ Egidio community by the European Platform for Conflict Prevention and Transformation.
