Over 800,000 refugees in Tanzania and DRC

    Tanzania and the DRC are among the top four refugee-hosting countries in Africa, UNHCR said in its latest ‘Fact Sheet’ on Africa. Tanzania currently hosted more than 480,000 refugees from Burundi, the DRC and Rwanda, and existing camps were now “nearing capacity”, UNHCR said. In the DRC, there were a total of 365,000 refugees, including tens of thousands of Angolans in Katanga, Bas-Congo and Kasai, and some 72,000 Sudanese refugees in the Dungu and Aba areas of the northeast. An estimated 20,000 Burundians were without assistance and protection in the Fizi area of South Kivu, where villages were regularly plundered and civilians forced to flee towards Tanzania, it added. Sudan and Guinea were the other two countries in Africa with the most refugees, according to the report.
