SADC-US create disaster reaction forum

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the United States government are working together to develop a regional institutional mechanism to respond promptly to disasters such as the recent floods, news reports said Wednesday. Dr Prega Ramsamy, acting executive secretary of SADC, said in Gaborone on Tuesday that the US had set aside US $200,000 to help establish the planned mechanism. Ramsamy said that the plans to create a quick-response capability in southern Africa followed the devastating floods in Mozambique, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Botswana earlier this year, which caught both regional and international governments by surprise.
