Mbeki, Zuma to attend Algiers DRC summit

South African President Thabo Mbeki and his foreign minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma will attend a summit in Algiers on the war in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Sunday, media reports said. Convened by Algeria's President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, the current chairman of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), the summit will discuss continuing efforts to bring peace and stability to the DRC and the Great Lakes region, the reports added. Other leaders expected to attend include DRC President Laurent-Desire Kabila, Zambian President Frederick Chiluba, Joaquim Chissano of Mozambique, Nigeria's Olusegun Obasanjo and Alpha Oumar Konare of Mali. OAU's Secretary-General Salim Ahmed Salim and former Botswana president Ketumile Masire are also scheduled to attend the one-day meeting. Masire is now engaged by the OAU as a mediator in the DRC with a brief to initiate internal dialogue among DRC groups.
