Kagame chairs first cabinet meeting

President Paul Kagame chaired his first cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Rwandan radio reported. It said the meeting was mainly to examine a draft law governing the 'gacaca' traditional justice system aimed at speeding up genocide trials. Prosecutor-General Gerald Gahima told IRIN it was hoped the gacaca system would be passed into law before the end of the year. The cabinet also resolved that laws governing prayer places and times of gathering should be respected, following reports of mushrooming religious cults. According to RNA, it decided to close down all cults and reglious sects in the country that did not have registration certificates.
