US Committee approves aid bill

The US House of Representatives' International Relations Committee on Thursday approved a bill authorising US $20 million in assistance for peace-building in Sierra Leone. According to a statement from the House of Representatives, the Sierra Leone Peace Support Act of 2000 will now go to the floor for consideration by the whole House. The aid would be used to support the country's demobilisation, disarmament and reintegration programme, as well as efforts to strengthen the capacity of the judiciary and the rule of law. The bill also calls for the setting up of a national truth and reconciliation commission.
