Government to repossess idle land

The Malawian said this week that it would enter into negotiations with estate owners to reposes more than one million hectares of "idle" land across the country. The Minister of Lands, Thengo Maloya, was quoted as saying that the decision followed recommendations from a recent presidential inquiry on land reform that investigated land redistribution in Malawi. The commission's report said that thousands of hectares of estate land were "lying idle while many Malawians lacked enough land for subsistence farming". "A policy document is being devised to determine how land should be apportioned," Maloya said.
