Casualties following fighting in the north

Last week's fighting in the northern town of Bafodia between erstwhile rebel allies resulted in an undetermined number of casualties, Information Minister Julius Spencer told IRIN on Wednesday. "We don't have any figures but there were RUF (Revolutionary United Front) and SLA (Sierra Leone Army) casualties," Spencer said. The fighting took place some 25 km northwest of Kabala. He also said there had been an unknown number of civilians wounded. Following the fighting, UNAMSIL troops and military observers disarmed 300 combatants of the ex-SLA/Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC) at Kabala on Thursday. It was one of the biggest disarmament operations carried out on a single day, UNAMSIL reported. UNAMSIL also returned 135 civilians who had been abducted or fled recent fighting back to their villages between Kabala and Bafodia.
