State media workers on strike over backpay

State media workers in Niger launched a two-day strike on Tuesday to demand payment of their salaries for June 1999, AFP reported. The strike action has had a "broad response", AFP reported a union official as saying. National radio played traditional music during the morning then stopped broadcasting shortly after a brief news reading at midday while state television plans to broadcast only in the evening. Public sector journalists as well as civil servants in Niger are owed some 12 or 13 months' back pay, according to AFP.
