Nearly 300 000 have fled Burundi since the election-related violence of April 2015. People are fleeing a climate of violence, arbitrary arrests, extrajudicial killings and forced recruitment. In Tanzania, along the border with Burundi, more than 165 000 Burundians have settled in three refugee camps: Nyarugusu, Nduta and Mtendeli. The European Commission has provided €36 million to its humanitarian partners to provide vital assistance in the Burundian refugee camps for registration, protection, health care, the distribution of food and essential non-food items such mats, mosquito nets, blankets, jerry cans and utensils. More recently, 10 000 shelters with brick walls have been built with the help of the refugees to replace the weathered tents they were living in. The Commission has also helped set up child-friendly spaces where children can play, dance and receive psycho-social help. Copyright: EU/ECHO/Anouk Delafortrie
