Women prepare food outside their makeshift shelters at an informal camp, known as "Olive Grove", located next to the reception centre in Moria on the Greek island of Lesvos. In September 2018, the Moria reception and identification centre hosted more than 8,500 asylum-seekers, almost four times its official capacity. Vathy reception centre on Samos island hosted 4,000 with a capacity for 650 people. Conditions in these state-run sites deteriorated as the capacity for government-led transfers to the mainland were overstretched by the numbers of new arrivals.
