Villagers are using a canoe to cross the Mussapa River near Dombe in Manica province. Cyclone Idai arrived on the night of March 14 near the Mozambique port city of Beira, bringing heavy winds and rains. Two major rivers, the Buzi and the Pungue, burst their banks. Ernesto Ameral said flood waters rose quickly once the banks broke, sending a torrent of water into the town. Some residents, he said, tried to take shelter in trees but many were swept away. The farming area was especially hard-hit because of the many waterways flanking the town.
