A South Sudanese mother and child arrive and wait to be registered at Imvepi settlement in northern Uganda.
As UNHCR confirms the one millionth refugee to cross from South Sudan into Uganda – 14-year-old Tabu Sunday from the city of Yei – numbers continue to arrive at Imvepi settlement. Imvepi, in northern Uganda, opened in February 2017 and by the end of July it was hosting 140,000 refugees, many of them children. The challenges faced by the refugees include a shortage of food, water and class overcrowding at the UNHCR-funded school. In total, some 4 million South Sudanese have been displaced from their homes by the violent conflict that began in December 2013, making it one of the world's largest refugee situations. When UN Secretary-General António Guterres visited the camp in June 2017, he applauded the "extraordinary generosity of the people and the Government of Uganda" in accepting so many of its neighbours.
