Avalanche kills six people in Tajikistan

Heavy snows blocked roads in some provinces and impeded aid delivery to vulnerable communities last winter. Afghanistan Masoud Popalzai/IRIN
An avalanche killed six people, including two children, near the Istiklol tunnel on the main highway linking the Tajik capital Dushanbe with the country’s north, the Central Asian News website reported on 27 February citing the Tajik emergencies agency.

According to the emergencies agency, the avalanche struck a car killing the driver and five passengers. As 93 percent of Tajikistan’s territory is mountainous, avalanches are common in winter and spring.
