At least 650,000 voters registered so far - IEC

More than 600,000 potential voters had added their names to Lesotho's voters' roll by Friday, according to the country's Independent Electoral Commission (IEC). News reports quoted IEC chairperson Leshele Thoahlane as saying that the commission had captured 650,000 names on its electronic database so far and estimated that up to 900,000 people had registered in total. He said there was a "sudden influx" of registration forms from centres around the country. "Our information technology manager has indicated that because of the sudden influx of registration forms arriving from centres around the country, we plan to take some of our best performing registration clerks from the best performing centres to come to assist at headquarters in the processing and completion of the registration forms," he was quoted as saying. The commission extended the registration period earlier this month because too few people had registered. The commission is preparing a voters' roll in preparation for a general election scheduled for next year.
